When we began working with Conga on their new headquarters, we noticed something different. They didn’t just say they were an active company, they showed up to meetings on bikes, scooters, and longboards, collectively identifying as explorers. Embracing the Colorado work-hard, play-hard lifestyle, they wanted a workplace where they choose their own adventure every day.

What aspects of outdoor adventuring are most compelling and empowering, and how can they be brought into a workplace?聽We uncovered shared geologic characteristics in the places that inspire Conga employees: expansion, contraction, discovery, and porosity.

Our palette was a first-generation whitespace with a single, massive 88,000-SF floorplate. First, a bold move begins to define space within the expanse: a meandering path flows through the rectilinear plan. Next, commanding masses are carved into the path, creating portals. Repeated vertical elements establish a cadence and expectation of movement. Finally, geometric armatures form an abstracted forest canopy that floats above the central core: a powerful destination where vibrant color, texture, and social energy emanate. Through designed connections, the whole environment is an experience of porosity. Garage doors invite employees to seamlessly bring their outdoor adventures in, while opaque, translucent, and transparent layers throughout the space intermingle to create a sense of wonder and intrigue. Even more private software engineering scrum rooms tucked away at the western edge have pass-throughs to green indoor parks and transparent walls that invite interaction.

As a fast-growing tech company, Conga had to piecemeal space across several temporary locations while they shot from $15 to $100m over three years. Many employees had packed up and moved several times to keep up with the rapid change. The desire to give everyone a unified home, and to welcome new employees in style, drove a hospitality-oriented design approach. High-touch materials reminiscent of the comforts of home, control lighting for intimate spaces, and multi-sensory emotive experiences were brought forward by the project’s award-winning hospitality interior designer. This 鈥渆mployee as guest” approach is also a boon to the company’s aggressive recruiting and retention efforts in a competitive talent market. Several months after opening, Bob Pinkerton, CFO, relayed that 鈥渟ince opening our building we鈥檝e had a 100% acceptance rate on our offer letters,鈥…and now, they can bring their bikes, scooters, and longboards with them. Conga was acquired by Apptus for $715m in May of 2020 and continues to operate from their 海角社区-designed Broomfield office.
