The State Theatre New Jersey is an 1,894-seat theater, which hosts approximately 200,000 guests in a typical season at performance types that include Broadway musical tours, film, unamplified and popular music, comedy, and spoken-word performances.

Originally designed and constructed as a 2,300-seat vaudeville house in 1921, the STNJ has undergone a series of additions and renovations over its lifetime. Since its last update in 1988 the STNJ had been in need of enhancements to bring the theater up to contemporary standards for performances and patron comfort and access. The renovation design addressed specific deficiencies related to performer/patron comfort, efficient operation, and accessibility. One of the most important pieces of this renovation is the increased accessibility of the theater, which includes the installation of an elevator, more accessible seating and companion seating, and additional accessible restrooms on both floors. New design elements such as the exterior blade sign and all new interior finishes weave together the original 1921 neo-classical features as well as those from the significant 1939 art deco alterations.
